As smartphones and tablets like the iPad, Galaxy, note and even kindle grow in popularity among consumers, will retailers adapt to this new market to make it integral to their own profits?
PayPal among others are keen on developing their contactless payment system in many shops, cementing themselves in the physical as well as virtual world. Credit and Debit card companies have already adapted the contactless card that retailers and business owners are beginning to provide for. We have already noticed increased demand and use in tablets in retailers, for example fashion or clothes stores are prompting customers with “walking tills” with a member of staff carrying the EPOS system around the shop with them, a similar system is being used in bars and restaurants, meaning customers can enjoy their meal and leave with the minimal fuss and hassle.
Supermarkets however seem to be the trend setters in this regard. The first to update from Legacy systems they now are implementing all kinds of innovations to their EPOS systems such as self-checkout, RFID scanners at the doors and of course tablets.
The future of EPOS systems in many shops look to be making the system simpler, allowing customers to make use of the system and having to provide minimal training to staff. An early example of this is the QR barcodes, while some phone and tablet manufacturers are considering implementing barcode scanning applications or devices with their devices.
Much of the technology is in place or exists and the future of EPOS may actually be in the present, in the following years it is likely to become the norm that old legacy systems may be done away with and increasingly efficient, modern and superior systems put in place to replace them.
